Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Protecting your skin from everything that can cause it harm is an impossible task. There is no cream or lotion that will keep your skin fully protected all day long. Sun damage and the effects of aging are unavoidable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat the skin issues caused by these factors.
It will take more than just a facial and a good scrub. There are strong and effective treatments out there that can rejuvenate the youthful and beautiful appearance of your skin. At Sudbury Med Spa, we can provide you with the personalized and powerful skin care you need using IPL technology.
What Is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. This non-invasive and non-surgical treatment is a gentle solution for skin problems. The treatment involves the use of pulses of intense light and can be used to target and resolve a wide variety of skin issues in areas like the face, neck, hands, and chest.
Some of the common issues that IPL treatments can address include:
- Sun spots
- Age spots
- Dilated and broken blood vessels
- Poor skin tone
- Uneven skin texture
IPL treatments are a great choice for treating adult acne and acne that does not respond to topical or oral medications. The treatments help to keep the skin clean and clear of any harmful factors that can trigger acne.
In order to see the best possible results, it is recommended that you undergo a series of six treatments. To maintain your results, it is best that you receive routine treatments every month after your initial package of treatments.
The pulses of light gently penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the targeted melanin in the skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin a darker color. When melanin forms together in a clump, it creates the appearance of sun spots and age spots. The intense pulses of light break up the cluster, which effectively eliminates dark spots on the skin.
The pulses of light can also be used to target hemoglobin, a component of the blood. The light damages the blood vessels containing the hemoglobin. This destroys them, and they are eventually absorbed by the body. This type of IPL treatment is ideal for treating dilated blood vessels, and broken blood vessels.
What to Expect During and After Your IPL Treatment
An IPL treatment can take 15 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the area and the issue being treated. Some patients experience mild discomfort, but the treatment should not produce any pain. A tingling sensation may be felt on the skin during the treatment.
While results can be seen after as little as one treatment, most patients will need about five treatments to achieve their desired results. Treatments are typically scheduled a month apart in order to avoid unwanted tissue damage.
After your treatment, your skin may appear red for a few days, and there may also be some slight swelling. In some cases, bruising may occur. Results should be long lasting. Maintenance treatments can be performed after about six months.
